Surrogacy has rapidly become a
mature medical process, with more and more IVF and Surrogacy clinics extending
their IVF services, to include surrogacy. While the medical procedures
are quite similar, the surrogacy process is much more complex, involving more parties (the surrogate), lawyer for legal
contracts and citizenship paperwork at the embassy (for the
baby). IVF clinics new to offering surrogacy services may
not have experience in dealing with many of these issues.
While going through the surrogacy
process in India, you will usually need to make at least two trips to India ,
although some people visit more often. Trips can include:
- Visit to see the clinic/agency and selecting a
surrogate (although this can often be done remotely)
- Visit for the egg retrieval [for self eggs] or sperm
donation procedure (although uncommon, some people ship these frozen and
avoid a trip)
- Visiting the surrogate during the pregnancy to meet her
and visit during her ultrasounds
- Visit for the birth of the baby, embassy work for
passport and exit visa and baby pick-up
Of course, you may visit several
times for the transfer process until you have a successful transfer.
To learn more about whether surrogacy in India is right for you, there are several
areas to understand:
- Which clinics provide surrogacy services
- What are their similarities and differences
- What are the costs of surrogacy
- What experiences have other people had
- Is there an agency I can contract to do whole process
for me
Regardless of which clinic and
country you use, do makes sure to investigate the legal issues (including who's
names will be on the birth certificate and what documents your embassy requires
to grant citizenship) as part of your due diligence, as this often becomes
the most complicated issue in the entire process.
